Many freeze-dried peptides form the familiar solid "hockey puck" at the bottom of a vial, an appearance that can be influenced not only by the peptide itself but also by excipients or bulking agents such as mannitol, glycine, or other stabilizers added to improve the structure and appearance of the finished cake. With a low-excipient formulation, the finished peptide may instead appear as a small amount of crystalline or irregular freeze-dried material, particularly because peptides are dosed in milligram quantities and occupy very little physical volume on their own. This smaller crystalline appearance should not be mistaken for less peptide; rather, it can reflect a formulation containing less added bulk. Rejuvatide uses this approach to provide a streamlined research-peptide formulation focused on the peptide itself rather than creating a large, cosmetically uniform freeze-dried puck through unnecessary fillers.
